There are a number of Books that are sold as spin-offs and activities for the target audience of the Spyro franchise, ranging from novels, sticker books, guides, and annuals. There hadn't been any books based on the Spyro series, until the Skylanders franchise.
Spyro the Dragon himself has played a role in few of the Skylanders prequel novels along with his fellow Skylanders companions. Starting in 2014, comics of the Skylanders franchise were released, several of them featuring Spyro, Cynder and debuting Malefor in his Skylanders incarnation.
