- “Roast 'N' Toast!”
- —Sunburn's official catchphrase
Sunburn is a phoenix dragon hybrid who is one of the playable Skylanders in the Skylanders series, first appearing in Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure. The Dragon's Peak Adventure Pack is the only product he is included in.
Character Development
Sunburn was originally more reptilian in appearance with no hint of avian features on him except for his feather-like tail. He was called Hot Flash and his other prototype name was Fire Dragon[1]
Gameplay designer Nat Loh developed this character, using inspirations from Star Control 2 for Sunburn's teleportation abilities. Unlike the random teleportation of the Arilou Lalee'lay Skiff, Sunburn needed to reflect the player's intentions so that he always teleported to where the player wanted. In his Guided Teleportation upgrade, Nat built upon this concept to layer in complexity which comes together beautifully in his Flame Lord path. The Flight of the Phoenix upgrade and its art is a reference to the Phoenix's Firebird Mode from Battle of the Plants / G-Force / Gatchaman anime series that Nat saw as a child.[1]
Background
Personality
Like all dragons, Sunburn is quite the prankster, but hates evil with a passion.[2]
Biography
Born in the center of an active volcano, Sunburn is part dragon, part phoenix, and 100% fire power. He is very proud of his unique heritage, and is the only dragon and phoenix hybrid known to exist in Skylands. This rare combination makes him a desirable target for dark wizards and bounty hunters who seek to gain power by unlocking the secrets behind Sunburn’s ability to teleport. Joining the Skylanders gave Sunburn a way to help defend the world from evil, but also provided him with protection, as he remains one of the most sought after creatures in Skylands.
Story
History
For years, soothsayers and psychics had predicted the birth of a dragon-phoenix cross. So, when the newly hatched Sunburn was catapulted into the world from his cozy volcanic nest, he became the drag-nix (or phoe-gon?) everyone wanted to meet. Sunburn became a target for every thief, bandit and evil sorcerer who wanted a piece of his powers. Thankfully, being able to both throw flames and teleport was a handy defense. Still for Sunburn, Skylands was not a safe place. Luckily, Master Eon also noticed his amazing abilities and made him a Skylander. This not only provided Sunburn with protection, but gave him a license to incinerate evil. It also provided plenty of opportunities to play teleporting pranks on his new teammates.[3]
Abilities
Sunburn has the ability to breathe streams of fire. He also has a unique ability to teleport from one place to another, leaving a trail of flames behind. It is said that his body temperature is so hot that his very molecules can't remain in one place and will teleport to a new location. Truth to be told, this ability has nothing to do with temperature, but is in fact a side effect of Sunburn being the only known half-dragon half-phoenix to exist.

Trivia
- In his earlier promotional design, Sunburn looked more reptilian compared to his current bird-like design.
- If it hadn't have been for his forelegs, he would resemble a Liver Bird, the symbol to the city of Liverpool, England or Fawkes from the Harry Potter series.
- He slightly resembles Sonic Boom, due to having bird-like qualities.
- Despite having wings, Sunburn doesn't possess the ability to fly in the game. This may be due to Sunburn having two upgrades that already involve speed, Teleportation and Dashing, and also due to Sunburn having the ability to walk on lava as a shortcut due to being a Fire Skylander. However, he is able to glide in the 3DS version of the game.
- The Phoenix Dash appears to be Sunburn's way of flying, as he appears to be floating above the ground when using it.
- Although not being able to fly in-game, in the 3DS versions, Sunburn is seen flying a little above the ground when he is using his Flamethrower attack.
- Despite his Soul Gem Ability being called "Flight of the Phoenix," it does not give Sunburn the ability to fly.
- Although not being able to fly in-game, in the 3DS versions, Sunburn is seen flying a little above the ground when he is using his Flamethrower attack.
- Sunburn and Flashwing are the only two Dragon Skylanders who don't have the Flight upgrade in the console versions, despite having wings, although both Skylanders can soar above ground as their dashing ability in the 3DS version.
- Sunburn's feathers are so hot, you can fry a troll egg on them![2]
- If you look closely when you teleport, you will see that Sunburn dissolves into ashes; a reference to the fact that phoenixes can catch fire and be reborn.
- Sunburn is the only Skylander on the Carrying Case that has his earlier design.
- In Giants, Sunburn is voiced by Troy Baker, who also voiced Brock, and is also known for voicing Espio the Chameleon in the recent Sonic the Hedgehog games, and Jetfire in Transformers: War for Cybertron, and other voiceover works.
- Sunburn and Camo are the only dragon Skylanders not to get Series 2 counterparts.
- In the Giants version of Dragon's Peak, the area where Sunburn's soul gem is found is named after him: Sunburn's Rest.
- Sunburn is briefly seen in Skylanders: The Beginning trailer flying while Spyro is talking to Gill Grunt.
- He and Jet-Vac share a battle cry when opening a treasure chest.
